TIME has announced its inaugural TIME100 AI list, spotlighting the top 100 influencers in artificial intelligence for 2023. On the cover, designed by Neil Jamieson, are key figures like OpenAI's Sam Altman, Anthropic's Dario and Daniela Amodei, and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis.
The issue offers deep dives into the lives and works of several trailblazers, such as Holly Herndon, Geoffrey Hinton, and others from renowned AI institutions.

🤖 Ernie Bot beats ChatGPT on multiple key AI tests, Baidu claims
Earlier this week, we highlighted some unusual opinions Baidu’s Ernie Bot had about recent historical events. Yet, the China Science Daily journal presents a different perspective.
This week, Baidu announced that its AI model, Ernie 3.5, powering its chatbot Ernie Bot, has outperformed OpenAI's ChatGPT in multiple benchmark tests.
In addition to that, the journal noted that Ernie 3.5 not only surpassed ChatGPT, built on OpenAI's GPT 3.5, but also outdid OpenAI's newer GPT 4 in Chinese tests.
Several evaluations, including those by Microsoft and U.S. universities, were conducted, with mixed results. Baidu's advancements underscore the growing AI competition between China and the U.S. tech giants. Just like its American counterpart, Ernie Bot can integrate with "plugins," allowing direct app access through the chatbot.

🏛 Microsoft says it will protect Copilot AI customers from AI copyright lawsuits
Microsoft has taken a bold step to back its users, offering to bear the brunt of copyright infringement lawsuits tied to its AI Copilot services.
Brad Smith, Microsoft's chief legal officer, outlined in a blog post the company's commitment. If commercial users follow the provided "guardrails and content filters," Microsoft promises to handle the legal costs stemming from copyright claims.
The motivation behind this policy lies in three pillars: unwavering support for its customers, recognizing copyright holders' legitimate concerns, and the confidence in their preventive mechanisms against potential copyright violations.
Since its debut with GitHub Copilot in June 2022, the Copilot feature set has expanded across various Microsoft platforms. However, certain free AI services are excluded from this protective umbrella.
