IBM researchers found a method to "hypnotize" large language models like ChatGPT and Bard, leading them to provide incorrect or even harmful advice.

Using a "game" framework, chatbots were manipulated to give false information without data tampering.
Malicious instructions included advising drivers to run red lights or spreading misinformation about the US tax agency’s procedures.
Users interacting with these bots couldn't discern their manipulated state, effectively trapping them in misleading conversations.

The vulnerability of LLMs to such manipulation is concerning, especially given their growing popularity. The research underlines the urgent need for enhanced security measures and a thorough exploration of potential misuse scenarios.

Baidu, the tech giant from China, recently stepped into the spotlight with the unveiling of its AI chatbot, Ernie.

However, Ernie's initiation into the public sphere hasn't been smooth.
The AI raised eyebrows with its unconventional claim that COVID-19 originated among American vape-users in 2019 and subsequently traveled to Wuhan via American lobsters. This perplexing stance, combined with its evident evasiveness on political subjects, particularly those concerning President Xi Jinping, has led many to question its programming and bias. Queries about sensitive topics either resulted in deflection, silence, or, in some cases, user bans. Interestingly, when prompted to compare itself to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Ernie Bot modestly defined its capabilities as more niche, whereas it acknowledged ChatGPT's broader linguistic prowess.

China's entry into the AI world, symbolized by Ernie Bot, underscores the nation's ambitions and potential in the tech realm. Yet, Ernie's inconsistent and often bewildering responses indicate a challenging path ahead. While Baidu's technological marvel might be a sign of more advancements to come, the quest for an unbiased, informed, and globally accepted AI remains a tall order.

🧠 Elon Musk’s X will use your data to train its AI

Elon Musk's rollercoaster leadership of the social media platform formerly known as Twitter took a concerning turn this week. Bloomberg revealed the site plans to gather users' biometric and job details to train AI models.

While Musk claims only public data will be used, a new privacy policy indicates otherwise, as it clearly states both public and collected user information can help “train machine learning or artificial intelligence models”. With no press team left to query, Musk's intentions remain unclear: perhaps the data will further his new venture xAI and its goal of understanding the universe, or maybe it will compete with LinkedIn's job features, which Musk called “cringe”.

Selling data is also an option to boost revenue, and while Twitter historically used data internally, Musk's approach could differ: his hasty changes leave users in the dark about how their information might be exploited.
