AI FAIR USE

In a landmark case watched closely by the entire tech world, a federal judge handed Anthropic a significant win. The court ruled that training its AI model, Claude, on copyrighted books constitutes "fair use"—but there's a huge catch. This ruling only applies to books Anthropic legally acquired. The company must still face trial in December for allegedly using a massive library of pirated books to build its models.

This decision is a double-edged sword. It suggests that the act of AI training can be seen as transformative, not just copying. However, it also fires a clear warning shot: the source of your training data matters. This nuanced ruling doesn't end the copyright debate, but it does draw a critical line in the sand for how AI companies build their foundational models.

AI AND MEDICINE

Is "medical superintelligence" on the horizon? Microsoft just took a giant leap in that direction. The company unveiled a new AI tool, the MAI-DxO, that achieved a stunning 85.5% accuracy rate in diagnosing some of medicine's most complex cases, pulled from the New England Journal of Medicine. For comparison, a panel of experienced human doctors correctly diagnosed the same cases just 20% of the time.

Microsoft is quick to point out this isn't about replacing doctors, but augmenting them. The AI acts like a virtual panel of experts, reasoning through symptoms and even optimizing for cost by avoiding unnecessary tests. While it's still a research project and not yet approved for clinical use, it's a powerful proof-of-concept for how AI could soon help tackle medicine's toughest challenges.

GLOBAL AI LANDSCAPE

Chinese tech giant Baidu is making a major power play by open-sourcing its advanced ERNIE 4.5 family of AI models. This isn't just one model, but a suite of ten different variants, including a massive 424-billion parameter version built on a sophisticated "Mixture-of-Experts" (MoE) architecture.

By releasing the models and their development toolkits under a permissive Apache 2.0 license, Baidu is inviting developers worldwide to build on its platform. This move is a clear strategy to foster a robust ecosystem around its technology, aiming to become the foundational framework for the next wave of AI applications in China and beyond. It’s a bold declaration of intent in the highly competitive global AI race.
