🤖 OpenAI is considering making its own AI chips

OpenAI is thinking about making its own AI chips to tackle the growing chip shortage affecting AI model training. This idea has been buzzing around within OpenAI since last year. The shortage has stretched the GPU supply chain thin, leading OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, to make getting more AI chips a top goal.
Right now, OpenAI, like many others, relies on GPU-based hardware for crafting models like ChatGPT, GPT-4, and DALL-E 3. But this reliance is expensive; a study showed that if ChatGPT queries got to a tenth of Google Search's size, it would need about $48.1 billion worth of GPUs at first, then $16 billion each year for upkeep.
With strong financial backing and nearly $1 billion in yearly revenue, OpenAI is in a good spot to invest in this venture. However, the hardware world, especially AI chips, is tough, with high risks and big costs. Moving towards custom AI chips could be a long, costly journey for OpenAI, making some wonder if the investors are ready for such a bold move, despite its potential to cut down costs and boost AI training.

AI TOOL OF THE DAY
👀 Still missing the “vision” feature in ChatGPT? Try this free alternative

In September, the tech community was abuzz with OpenAI's announcement of an innovative GPT-4 feature: GPT-4V or GPT-4 Vision. This feature promises an enriched user experience, facilitating dialogues centered around uploaded images.
While the anticipation for this feature's widespread release grows, a free and open-source alternative has emerged - It’s called LLaVa, and it’s ready for you to try right now, without waiting for GPT-4V to roll-out to your ChatGPT Plus account.
LLaVa, an open-source tool, mirrors the functionalities of GPT-4V.
Its availability underscores the vitality of open-source contributions in AI.
Such alternatives ensure that users aren't solely dependent on major players, fostering a diverse and user-responsive environment.
Reflecting on the Broader Picture The advent of LLaVa is more than just a temporary solution for those awaiting GPT-4V. It stands as a testament to the thriving ecosystem of AI, where open-source initiatives can coexist and even compete with giants like OpenAI. For end-users, this translates to more choices, enhanced accessibility, and a promise of continual innovation.

AI IMAGE EDITING
🪄 Adobe teases new AI photo editing tool in response to Canva's breakthrough Magic Studio

What a time to be alive, with new breakthrough AI tools being launched on an almost weekly basis. This week, it's Adobe's turn, as they are expected to unveil their latest AI photo editing tool in response to Canva's Magic Studio at the upcoming Adobe Max event.
Named Project Stardust, this 'object-aware editing engine' is designed to make image changes simple, even for beginners. It smartly identifies and separates objects in photos, allowing for easy modifications. This tool shares some features with Google's recent Magic Editor, but is expected to have a bit more up its sleeve.
In a short demo, everyday items in a photo were automatically picked out, showcasing how easily objects could be moved, removed, or altered. The software cleverly fills in any gaps left by moved or deleted objects, blending with the surrounding area.
Additionally, the engine leverages generative AI for creative tweaks like swapping a selected area with AI-generated flowers or changing clothing items on a model. While automated design tools are growing in number with the progress in generative AI, Project Stardust stands as a noteworthy leap, potentially reshaping how we engage with Adobe products. The full reveal at Adobe Max is set to open a new chapter in AI-driven photo editing.
