🎓 Professor caught using ChatGPT after submitting paper full of factual errors
A surprising discovery was made by a Danish biologist, Henrik Enghoff, when he found references to non-existent papers under his name in a scientific article about millipedes.
The article had initially been uploaded to Preprints.org and was taken down following concerns over its authenticity, but has since reappeared on Research Square, another preprint platform.
Enghoff's speculation was that the authors, from China and Africa, might have employed OpenAI's ChatGPT to source academic references. This assumption proved correct.
Kahsay Tadesse Mawcha from Aksum University in Ethiopia, previously identified as the primary author of the problematic preprint, confessed to the Danish newspaper Weekendavisen that he had utilized ChatGPT. He later acknowledged that the tool wasn't deemed suitable for such purposes.
This isn't an isolated incident; earlier, reporters from The Guardian identified made-up articles generated by ChatGPT. This unsettling trend underscores the challenges AI poses to the integrity of academic and journalistic pursuits.
AI's ability to "hallucinate" references or fabricate articles is alarming, with experts warning about its potential to misinform policy decisions or degrade trust in the scientific community.
