🧠 Apple is reportedly spending ‘millions of dollars a day’ training its conversational AI

Apple has been pouring millions daily into artificial intelligence innovations, as revealed in a recent report by The Information.

Apple’s AI research isn’t limited to just one unit; they've distributed efforts across multiple teams. Notably, the “Foundational Models” unit, which focuses on conversational AI, comprises about 16 individuals, including ex-Google engineers.

It operates under the leadership of John Giannandrea, Apple's AI head, who joined in 2018 to boost Siri's capabilities. Interestingly, Giannandrea isn’t completely sold on the practicality of AI-driven chatbots. Apple's also delving into visual AI through its Visual Intelligence team, with image generation models and multimodal AI, capable of understanding and producing both text and visual content.

Among the forthcoming projects is a chatbot designed to assist AppleCare users and tools to streamline Siri's task automation. Insiders claim Apple's in-house LLM, dubbed Ajax GPT, surpasses the capabilities of OpenAI’s GPT-3.5, although it’s primarily for internal operations.
